Along with Senefelder and renowned English lithographer Charles Hullmandel (1789-1850), Frenchman Godefroy Engelmann (1788-1839) was one of the most influential lithographers in the refinement and advancement of lithography. His first treatise, Manuel du Dessinateur Lithographe (1822), and this later treatise, were some of the most comprehensive of the trade. Engelmann’s chromolithographie method of printing in four colors (blue, red, yellow, and black), patented in 1837, influenced the work of innovative Philadelphia lithographers Wagner & McGuigan, and his chemical method for major retouches of grained stones following printing was most likely utilized for the Goodyears print displayed in Section I.
