PROGRAM IN EARLY AMERICAN ECONOMY AND SOCIETY FELLOWSHIPS FOR 2013-2014

The Library Company of Philadelphia’s Program in Early American Economy and Society invites applications for three types of fellowship awards to be granted during 2013-2014.  These fellowships are designed to promote scholarship about the early American economy and society, broadly defined, from its colonial beginnings to roughly the 1850s. Some of the possible topics of research include the history of race and economy, households, transnational discourses of economy, commerce, technology, manufacturing, agriculture, and political economy. Applicants for the post-doctoral and dissertation fellowships may submit proposals based not only on the extensive collections at the Library Company, but also on the printed and manuscript materials of other institutions in the Philadelphia area.  Short-term fellows should plan to spend a continuous month of research in the collections of the Library Company.

For the coming fellowship cycle, PEAES will offer:

One post-doctoral fellowship is tenable for nine consecutive months of residency from September 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014.  It may  be divided between two scholars, for the periods September 1, 2013 to January 15, 2014, or January 15, 2014 to May 31, 2014. The stipend is $40,000 for the full nine months, or $20,000 if the award is divided. Deadline for receipt of post-doctoral application materials is November 1, 2012.

One dissertation-level fellowship, carrying a stipend of $20,000, is tenable for nine consecutive months of residency from September 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014. It may  be divided between two scholars, who would each receive $10,000 for the period between Sept. 1, 2013 to January 15, 2014 or January 15, 2014 to May 31, 2014.

Four short-term fellowships, carrying stipends of $2,000 each, are tenable for a month of continuous research at the Library Company between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014.
Deadline for receipt of dissertation and one-month fellowship applications is March 1, 2013.
