This Ben’s Lens shows the birthplace of artist Benjamin West. In 1874 Swarthmore College purchased property adjacent to the campus including the West residence. This stereograph, taken by Philadelphia photographer Montgomery P. Simons, was shot about the time of the college’s purchase. In 1966 the Benjamin West residence was designated a national historic landmark, and today houses Swarthmore College’s visitor information center.
