Ben's Lens: December 2008

Philadelphia photographer Robert Newell captured the Church of St. James the Less on a winter’s day ca. 1870. Built between 1846 and 1850 in East Falls near Laurel Hill Cemetery, this Gothic-style church recreates the architectural plan of a 13th century English country parish church. The church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985. In recent years, a dispute between the church and the Diocese of Pennsylvania led to the removal of the congregation to another location. In 2008 St. Mark’s Church in Center City adopted the Church of St. James the Less with the plan of re-establishing a church community there once again.
