The Benjamin Franklin statue, sculpted by John J. Boyle (1851-1917) was presented as a gift to Philadelphia by Justus C. Strawbridge in 1899. The statue originally sat in front of the United States Post Office building at 9th and Chestnut Streets, the structure depicted in this photograph. When the Post Office was razed in 1938 the city presented the statue as a permanent loan to the University of Pennsylvania, an institution Franklin helped to establish. It is now located in front of College Hall on Penn’s campus.
