Ben's Lens: April 2007

A door to door fund drive through Philadelphia's Roxborough neighborhood raised about $13,000 for the erection of the 21st Ward Memorial in Gorgas Park shown in this Ben's Lens. Herman Miller, an architect and Roxborough native, designed the memorial which was dedicated in 1920. The sixty-three gold stars in the dome represented the soldiers from Philadelphia's 21st Ward killed in World War One. Under the management of the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust Inc. with funds from the Friends of Gorgas Park and the 21st Ward Veterans Association, the memorial is being restored. Our photograph was taken about 1926 and forms part of the Official Photographer City Hall Collection.
