Ben's Lens: November 2012
Construction of the Guarantee Trust and Safe Deposit Company Building at 316-320 Chestnut Street was completed in 1875. Designed by the architectural firm of Furness and Hewitt, the bank was described in a contemporary account as “a handsome building that attracts unusual attention from the unique appearance and bold departure from the prevailing architecture of our public buildings.” One of more than twenty banks designed by Furness, this building stood along “Bankers Row” until its demolition in the mid-1950s.
