Ben's Lens: November 2006

The image of the last two months shows workers’ row houses at the Howell Works, today known as the Historic Village of Allaire, in Farmingdale, N.J. The row houses, completed in 1833, provided shelter for bog iron workers at the early 19th-century industrial complex established by New York businessman James Allaire. The forge ceased operations by 1850 and the “deserted village” became a site of curiosity for those such as the Morris family who summer vacationed at neighboring seaside resorts in Monmouth County. Today the site acts as a living history museum in Allaire State Park. The Library Company holds a collection of over 1500 negatives by Marriott C. Morris dated between 1881 and circa 1894. The negatives primarily document Germantown; Sea Girt in Monmouth County, N.J.; Bermuda; and his alma mater Haverford College.
