Ben's Lens: August 2010

In 1929 photographer James Rich visited Watkins Glen, New York with his wife Sarah and daughter Hazel. The natural beauty of the area had long attracted tourists, particularly after the railroad reached the region in the mid-19th century. The library's collection also includes a set of 18 stereographs taken about 1870 for the Northern Central Railroad showing the ravines, waterfalls, and rock formations of Watkins Glen. The site is currently part of New York's state park system.
